역사
- 1933년 미국의 세인트루이스 시민운동가, 변호사 루터 엘리 스미스(Luther Ely Smith, 1873 ~ 1951)의 노력으로 개발되었는데, 그는 1933년 이 지역을 선정하고 1935년 미국 정치인 프랭클린 델라노 루즈벨트(Franklin Delano Roosevelt, 1882 ~ 1945)를 설득하여 세인트루이스가 채권 발행을 통과시켜 건설을 시작한 후 국립공원관리청(National Park Service)으로 지정
- 아치는 핀란드계 미국인 건축가 에로 사리넨(Eero Saarinen, 1910 ~ 1961)은 1947년에 이 디자인을 꿈꿨고, 1965년 10월 28일에 그의 비전이 실현
- 2003년 미주리 주에서 발행된 25센트 동전에서 등장
