- 코디악의 섬의 암반의 최초 형성시기는 각각 다르지만 오래된 것은 효신세(曉新世) 중기인 6100만년전이다.
- 코디악 섬이 처음 발견된 것은 아메리카 원주민인 알루티크 족이지만 19세기 중반 천연두에 의하여 사실상 절멸
- 기록으로 처음 등장한 것은 1763년 러시아의 모피상인 스테판 글로토프가 발견했으며, 에스키모어로 '섬'이라는 뜻인 키크타크로 알려져 있다가 1890년 카디액, 1901년 코디액으로 재명명되었다.
