- 유럽의 최초의 기록은 1792년 스페인 탐험가, 군인 카예타노 발데스 이 플로레스 바잔 (Cayetano Valdés y Flores,1767 ~ 1835)과 에스파냐 군인이자 탐험가 디오니시오 알칼라 갈리아노 (Dionisio Alcalá Galiano, 1760 ~ 1805)가 발견하였고 토피노이라는 단어가 에스파냐의 군인, 천문학자 비센테 토피뇨 데 산 미겔 이 반데왈레 (Vicente Tofiño de San Miguel y Vandewalle, 1732 ~ 1795)에서 나왔다.
- 공식적인 최초의 발견은 아메리카 원주민인 누차눌트(Nuu-chah-nulth)가 기원전 5천년경에 거주하면서이다.
- 암반은 화강암 계열로 최대 백악기 초기인 1억년전 형성되었고 최소는 신생대 효신세 초기인 6400만년전이며
- 대서양 판과 북아메리카 판이 만나는 카스케이디아 부분단층 지역에 위치해 있어, 대규모 지진이 발생할 가능성이 있다.
- 사실상 육지가 없는 노출된 해안이기 때문에 이 지역의 폭풍 시즌은 일반적으로 11월부터 2월 말까지이며, 가장 많은 폭풍이 발생하는 시기는 12월부터 2월까지는 사업이나 행정 업무 등의 특별한 사정이 아닌이상 방문 자제하는 것이 좋을 것이다.
