- 1802년 탐험가 이며 지리학자인 영국 항해사, 지도제작자 매슈 플린더스(Matthew Flinders, 1774 ~ 1816)가 유럽인 가운데 처음으로 발견
- 분홍색 호수가 나오는 것은 외부 수원으로부터 호수가 격리되어 있어 뚜렷한 수화학적 특성을 유지된 것과 미생물 할로필(halophiles), 녹조류 두날리엘라 살리나(Dunaliella salina), 박테리아 리니박터 루버(Salinibacter ruber)에 의해 생성되는 색소으로 인해서이다.
- 호수물 자체는 인체에 무해하며, 호수에서 수영이 가능하지만 언제부터인가 국제조류보호연맹에 의해 중요 조류 보호구역(IBA)으로 지정되어 있기 때문에, 평범한 관광객은 이 호수에 접근 금지
- 암반은 정안기(靜安紀) 말인 16억년전 형성되었지만 호수 자체 형성 추정시기는 홀로세 후기로 보며 정안기 당시의 캔필드 바다(Canfield Ocean)를 이해에 대한 보조적으로 도움되는 호수
